For quality wines, Prädikat wines, quality liqueur wines psr, quality semi-sparkling wines psr and sparkling wines psr, only vineyard names that are entered in the vineyard register and whose vineyards are located in one or more municipalities in the same growing region may be used as geographical designations of origin. For quality wines and Prädikat wines, only vineyard names that are entered in the vineyard register and if the wines meet the strict requirements of § 19 Para. 11 BayWeinRAV may be used.
The vineyard name must be conventional for the vineyard area belonging to the site or entered in the land register or be based on such a name. The minimum size is 5 ha, which may be less in exceptional cases. It must be possible to produce equivalent wines of the same taste from the yields. Delimited smaller geographical units within the meaning of Section 23 (1) No. 2 of the Wine Act (Gewanne) entered in the land register may be entered in the vineyard register.
The informal application must be submitted to the municipality in which the site is wholly or predominantly located, together with all attachments (maps at a scale of 1 : 2,500 or 1 : 5,000) in at least five copies. The municipality submits the application together with its statement directly to the government of Lower Franconia, which makes the final decision on the application. When applying for a Gewann, the application must also be accompanied by a current real estate map with the Gewann name entered on it, a list of all the parcels of land located in the Gewann and a current proof of area and use showing that the applicant is farming a parcel of land in the Gewann applied for at the time of application.
