Procedure details

A mother/father/child measure is inpatient medical treatment for mothers and fathers whose health is under strain or at risk due to their family situation. The measure can also be taken up by mothers or fathers alone.

The treatment is carried out in a facility of the Müttergenesungswerk or a similar facility. You will also stay there during the treatment, which is tailored to the needs of mothers and fathers based on their individual stress situation.

The facility will be selected by your health insurance fund, which will take your wishes into account as far as possible.

The mother/father/child measures usually last three weeks, and four to six weeks for children under 14 years of age. They can be repeated after four years at the earliest. If there is a justified medical need, an extension or a new benefit can be applied for.

The mother/father/child measure must be prescribed by a doctor.

You must apply to your health insurance fund for the mother/father/child measure.

The application and the doctor's prescription must be checked and approved by the health insurance fund. If necessary, they will also be checked by the medical service.

Insured persons who have reached the age of eighteen and are taking advantage of a mother/father/child measure pay EUR 10.00 per calendar day to the facility, which forwards the payments to the health insurance fund.

Co-payments are only to be made up to the individual limit (2% of gross income for living expenses or 1% of gross income for living expenses for chronically ill persons). Please enquire with your health insurance company.

Mother/father/child measures can be repeated after four years at the earliest, unless an early benefit is urgently required for medical reasons.

The health insurance fund must decide on an application for benefits promptly:

  • no later than three weeks after receipt of the application
    or
  • if an expert opinion is obtained, in particular from the Medical Service, within two weeks of receipt of the expert opinion.
