Stream sponsorships offer committed and environmentally aware citizens, especially young people, the opportunity to support those responsible for maintenance in the care and development of the water ecosystem, including its banks, with the aim of preserving or restoring it to a near-natural state. Stream sponsorships can help to promote both the biological effectiveness of a watercourse and public awareness for the preservation of intact, near-natural watercourses.

Stream sponsorships can be taken on by associations, nature conservation groups, school classes and also by individual interested citizens.

Stream sponsorships only make sense if the sponsors make use of the expertise and experience of the water management authorities, district administrative authorities (nature conservation specialists) and those responsible for maintenance. Good will alone is not enough; without some specialist knowledge, even good will would float down the stream. Stream sponsorships only make sense if there is a willingness to work responsibly on watercourses over the long term. A period of at least five years is desirable, which can then be extended by mutual agreement
Stream sponsorships can support, but not replace, those responsible for maintenance and development under water legislation, e.g. municipalities, water and soil associations.
