Procedure details

The State Office for Non-State Museums, which is part of the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments, supports and advises the non-state museums as a service institution of the Free State of Bavaria in all specialist matters relating to museum work. State funding for non-state museum projects is provided via the State Office.

Recipients

The non-state

museums supported by the State Agency include institutions maintained by local authorities, i.e. districts, counties, towns and municipalities, but also by public institutions such as religious communities or public law institutions and foundations. In addition, private-law forms of sponsorship also play an important role for non-state museums: these include, in particular, museums run by associations, foundations, companies and private individuals, provided they are regularly open to the public.

Object and eligible costs

State grants to non-state museums in Bavaria can be awarded by the State Agency for the following purposes

, among others:
  • Concepts (e.g. feasibility studies, utilization and exhibition concepts),
  • Museum equipment and exhibition design (excluding special and temporary exhibitions),
  • Creating suitable conservation conditions for the presentation and storage of museum objects in exhibition and storage rooms, e.g. by planning measures for climate stabilization and light protection as well as for setting up storage facilities (preventive conservation),
  • Conservation and restoration of museum objects
  • Projects in the field of inventory and documentation as well as digitization,
  • Projects for the scientific cataloging of museum collections, in particular provenance research,
  • didactic development of museum collections (e.g. through infographics or audiovisual media),
  • transfer of architectural objects to scientifically managed open-air museums,
  • museum education projects, including the planning and installation of museum education rooms,
  • sustainable public relations projects.

The grants are awarded as project funding by way of pro rata financing for investment measures that are of lasting benefit to the museum. Particular importance is attached to measures to implement inclusion. Expenditure for ongoing operations or for special and temporary exhibitions will not be funded. Structural measures, the installation of building services and security equipment in the museum building are also not eligible for funding.

Type and amount

The grant is provided as proportional funding in relation to the total eligible costs. The amount of funding depends on the technical necessity of the measure and the neediness of the applicant.

The significance and urgency of the project are decisive for the allocation of funding.

There is no legal entitlement to funding. Funding is granted in accordance with the budget funds available.

The prerequisites for funding a measure within the framework of the available budget funds are

  • secure sponsorship,
  • secure and sufficient professional management and staffing,
  • orderly financial circumstances,
  • permanent availability of a meaningful and exhibitable collection,
  • permanent museum operation,
  • regular and sufficient opening hours,
  • usability of the museum as a public educational institution,
  • agreement with the regional authority on all essential aspects before the start of the planned project,
  • time commitment of the funding of at least ten years,
  • permanent availability of suitable premises.

Grants may only be approved for projects that have not yet been started. However, in justified exceptional cases, it is possible to approve an early start to the project upon application.

  • detailed description of the project, including timetable
  • detailed cost and financing plan
  • The Landesstelle may request further documents for the technical assessment.

The complete application documents must be submitted in writing to the Landesstelle für die nichtstaatlichen Museen in Bayern. Before submitting an application, it is recommended that you contact the responsible consultant at an early stage.

Funding procedures are free of charge.

Grant applications must be submitted to the state office before June 30 of the current year.

A complaint can be filed against a negative funding decision.
