Procedure details

Master winemakers generally run their winery independently. They are responsible for carrying out work in the vineyard and cellar, for marketing and training.

Training to become a master winemaker is a further vocational training course in accordance with the Vocational Training Act (BBiG), which requires training in the recognized training occupation of winemaker or another agricultural training occupation with several years of professional experience.

Preparation for the master winemaker examination can take place as follows: The Staatliche Fach- und Technikerschule für Agrarwirtschaft Veitshöchheim offers a one-year advanced training course to become a state-certified economist for viticulture and oenology. Students can also use this further training to prepare for the master craftsman's examination in viticulture. Part of the final examinations at the end of the first year (vocational training and employee management, project work, sensory analysis) are recognized for the master craftsman examination. The other examinations for the master craftsman's examination are taken in the following year in which the master craftsman candidates work in the company.

The master craftsman examination can also be started without attending school.

Admission to the master craftsman examination is granted to those who can provide evidence of 24 months of professional practice following the final vocational examination.
