Procedure details

Both reinforced semi-finished products (e.g. laminated fabric and glass) and finished products (e.g. helmets and protective vests) are required for preventive measures in the area of personal and property protection. To compare the protective properties of the products, quality testing is required by independent bodies in accordance with various standards and guidelines. The ballistics authorities therefore carry out material tests with this in mind.

Typical test objects are

  • Bulletproof vests: Bulletproof vests or parts thereof are tested by firing at plasticine plates. Various types of projectiles with different velocities are fired at the test sample. The protection value of the material results from the ability of the test sample to withstand certain projectiles and from the penetration depth in the plasticine. The materials used for personal protection are also tested for impact and stab protection using standardized methods.
  • Bulletproof glass and other reinforcements: Testing of the bullet-resistant properties of attack-resistant materials is carried out for bullet penetration and/or penetration limits. The test parameters, such as projectile type, projectile velocity and firing distance, are defined in the various standards. The burglar-resistant properties of glazing are tested for penetration resistance using a mechanical impact test and for impact resistance using the bullet drop test.

If you have any questions, please contact the responsible ballistics office (Munich or Mellrichstadt).
