Procedure details

In Bavaria, there are 17 state and 7 non-state universities of applied sciences / technical universities (formerly universities of applied sciences; hereinafter: HaW/TH); the University of the Federal Armed Forces Munich and the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt also offer courses at universities of applied sciences. This means that it is possible to study at a HaW/TH close to home at a total of 26 locations in all parts of Bavaria. In addition, there are other regional study programmes that have been established and expanded since 2014 as part of the state government's science-based structural and regionalization strategy.

Studying at a HaW/TH is characterized by the pronounced practical relevance of the teaching and the focus on the job market. In addition to their academic qualifications, all professors have several years of professional experience. Students become familiar with the requirements of the working world at an early stage during practical semesters and deal intensively with specific issues from professional practice during their studies.

The courses are therefore aimed in particular at prospective students who want to work with scientific methods in a practical and results-oriented manner.

The HaW/TH generally offer Bachelor's and Master's degree courses. Bachelor's degree courses lead to a first university degree with professional qualification. The standard period of study is seven semesters, usually including a practical semester. The course concludes with a Bachelor's degree, e.g. "Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.)".

Master's degree courses lead to a second university degree. They either build directly on the first university degree or can be taken up as a continuing education Master's degree course (continuing education courses) after professional practice following the first university degree. The standard period of study is three or four semesters. The course concludes with a Master's degree, e.g. "Master of Engineering (M.Eng.)".

Further information on the Bavarian universities of applied sciences/technical universities and their study programs can be found on the website of the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts (see "Related links").

In order to study on a Bachelor's degree course, you must have an entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences or a general or subject-specific higher education entrance qualification. Under certain conditions, graduates of the master craftsman's examination, advanced vocational training examinations equivalent to the master craftsman's examination as well as technical schools and technical academies can also study at a university of applied sciences/TH.

For individual degree courses, the universities of applied sciences/technical colleges may also require training in a profession corresponding to the chosen subject area or practical work experience (pre-study practice). Further qualifying Bachelor's degree courses require the completion of vocational training.

For degree courses in design, architecture and interior design, an aptitude test must also be passed as proof of artistic aptitude.

A first university degree is a prerequisite for studying on a Master's degree course; continuing education Master's degree courses also require qualified practical professional experience of generally no less than one year. The universities may also specify further admission requirements.

Further information can be obtained directly from the student advisory service and other responsible offices (admissions, enrolment, study office, etc.) at the respective university.

  • Documents for the application for a study place or enrollment for the respective study program can be obtained directly from the responsible offices (admission, enrollment, student office, etc.) of the respective university.

Studies up to the first professionally qualifying degree (Bachelor) and studies in a consecutive degree program leading to a further professionally qualifying degree (Master) are generally tax-free.

Continuing education: The universities charge fees for the participation of students and persons enrolled in accordance with Art. 87 para. 3 sentence 1 BayHIG in continuing education courses in accordance with Art. 78 BayHIG; participants in continuing education courses who are neither students nor persons enrolled in accordance with Art. 87 para. 3 sentence 1 BayHIG, as well as students who predominantly participate in courses offered at a foreign location outside the European Union, are charged a fee under private law.

Part-time studies: Universities may charge fees for study programs that are offered on a part-time basis regardless of prior vocational training or that are offered alongside vocational training or for persons with ongoing vocational training in accordance with the increased costs for these formats. If the university makes use of the option to charge fees, the increased expenditure consists of the additional personnel and material costs incurred for the conception and implementation of such events.

Every student enrolled at a Bavarian state university must pay a basic fee per semester (student union fee) and, if applicable, a so-called solidarity fee for the semester ticket in the respective public transport association. The fees are levied by the respective university and must be paid before enrollment. The obligation of students at non-state universities to pay contributions depends on whether the respective non-state university is supervised by a student union and is included in a semester ticket agreement.

Further information can be obtained directly from the student advisory service and other responsible offices (admissions, enrollment, student office, etc.) at the respective university.

Studies at a HaW/TH generally begin in the winter semester (October 1).

The academic year, semester and lecture and teaching periods are determined by the universities. Please inform yourself there in good time.

Enrolment is required for all degree programs (matriculation).

For a number of degree programs, formal admission is required prior to enrolment (admission-restricted degree programs). In these cases, there are strict deadlines for receipt of the application for admission by the university.

The aptitude tests required for some degree programs may take place before this deadline. Please enquire at the respective university in good time about the applicable deadlines.

The university may require pre-registration prior to enrolment for degree programs that are not subject to admission restrictions.

At some HaW/TH, it is also possible to start in the summer semester (March 15) for some degree programs.

Further information can be obtained directly from the student advisory service and other responsible offices (admissions, enrollment, student office, etc.) at the respective university.
