University degree courses combine research and teaching to provide a primarily academic education. For degree programs with admission restrictions (Numerus Clausus), you must apply for admission to the desired degree program. Pre-registration may be required for degree courses without admission restrictions.
Universities are responsible for the maintenance and further development of science through basic and applied research and science-based teaching. Universities have the right to award doctorates and habilitations; they train the next generation of academics. Universities generally offer degree courses in the fields of theology, humanities, law, economics, social sciences, medicine, natural sciences, engineering and the various teaching professions. The course is usually designed as a Bachelor's or Master's degree course. Bachelor's degree courses take between six and eight semesters and lead to a first university degree that qualifies students for a profession. The course is completed with a university examination and the academic Bachelor's degree is awarded. Master's degree courses lead to a second university degree in a standard period of study of two to four semesters. They either build directly on the first university degree or can be taken up as a postgraduate Master's degree course after professional practice following the first university degree. Here too, the course is completed with a university examination and the academic Master's degree is awarded.
In law, medicine and teaching, on the other hand, the degree courses conclude with a state examination ("Staatsexamen") and in theology with an ecclesiastical examination.
With a few exceptions, a doctorate is a prerequisite for an academic career and generally requires a Master's degree.
