You need a valid radio certificate to participate in the mobile maritime radio service or inland navigation radio service.

There are two types of radio certificates for the maritime radio service:

  • The general radio operating certificate, also known as the Long Range Certificate (LRC), entitles you to participate in VHF, border and short wave as well as the mobile maritime radio service via satellite, which also works on the high seas.
  • The limited radio operating certificate, also known as the Short Range Certificate (SRC), only entitles you to participate in VHF marine radio, which is only sufficient near the coast.

To obtain the general radio operator's certificate (LRC), you must pass a theory and practical examination. You must submit an application in writing or online for admission to the examination and subsequent issue or initial issue of the LRC.
