Procedure details

Moors are important carbon dioxide reservoirs. The purpose of the funding is to preserve, optimize and restore peatlands.

A key objective of peatland restoration is to restore the function of peatlands asCO2 reservoirs. At the same time, the habitats of rare animal and plant species are sustainably secured and protected.

Funding is provided for the purchase of land, the creation of renaturation concepts and the implementation of projects for the rewetting of moors.

In addition, the EU is providing the Free State of Bavaria with funds from the ERDF program 2021-2027 (ERDF - European Regional Development Fund) in the area of "Green Infrastructure - Improving Biodiversity", which can be used for moorland protection.

Funding is also provided on the basis of the LNPR in accordance with the relevant EU ERDF requirements.

Local authorities, special-purpose associations, nature parks, landscape conservation associations, nature conservation associations and private owners are eligible to apply.

The measures must be suitable for promoting and restoring natural bog development and peat growth.

  • Available from the district administrative authority (lower nature conservation authority) and the governments (higher nature conservation authority).

Processing takes place within the framework of the Landscape Conservation and Nature Park Guidelines (LNPR).

Applications for the current year are submitted to the district administrative authorities (lower nature conservation authorities). Applications for multi-year projects (max. four years) can also be submitted in coordination with the approval authorities.

The approval authorities are the responsible governments (higher nature conservation authorities).

In order to enable improved control and a more targeted use of funds, the available funding in 2025 will be distributed as part of a prioritization process. In order to be considered, funding applications must be received by the lower nature conservation authorities (uNB) by 29.04.2025 at the latest. The projects submitted are expected to be released and approved from 06.06.2025. When distributing the budget funds, particular attention will be paid to safeguarding nature conservation structures. Priority will be given to projects that explicitly serve to implement legal obligations or the goals set out in the coalition agreement of the governing coalition. These include projects for the implementation of the Bavarian Orchard Pact, moorland protection, species protection and the expansion and maintenance of the biotope network. However, there are also projects that cannot be considered in the current process. These include multi-year projects, projects involving large-scale scrub clearance and clearing, the creation and maintenance of hedges and copses, land purchases outside of moors and some projects in the area of nature park promotion. The funds disbursed via the procedure cannot be paid out until spring 2026 at the earliest. For more detailed information, please contact the relevant government and lower nature conservation authorities.

There are no application deadlines for peatland restoration measures.
