The Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte (House of Bavarian History) provides an extensive range of online content. On various portals, in the Bavariathek and in the media library, you can find online content and films on topics of Bavarian history and culture.
Archive of the future
The Bavariathek does not stop at a look into the past. It explores questions that concern the future: What will remain of us and the present? Which developments will be remembered in 50 years' time? Which events will "make history" and which will only go down as footnotes in the history books? We cannot know how later historians will judge the present, but we can: Document the present in the archive of the future.
Virtual museum
The virtual museum explores aspects of the museum's permanent exhibition and special exhibitions in greater depth. Selected exhibition themes are presented in digital form and supplemented by multimedia content. The virtual museum also provides a glimpse into the museum's depot and shows objects that are not yet on display in the exhibitions.
Revolution! Bavaria 1918/19
Few topics in modern Bavarian history still provoke such controversial reactions today as the turbulent period from November 1918 to May 1919. The Bavariathek shows the outbreak of the revolution in Munich and the subsequent events. Meet the influential political ideas and players and take a look at what happened in other places throughout Bavaria!
Atlas of reconstruction
In 1945, many Bavarian cities lay in ruins. In many places, (re)construction lasted until the mid-1960s. This richly illustrated portal provides information on the destruction and reconstruction work, using the example of the 184 largest towns and municipalities in Bavaria (as of 1968).
Media archive
The media archive comprises around 75,000 prints, 200,000 negatives, 22,000 slides and 1,100 video films(annual report). Other items in the collection include media packages, prints, drawings, letters, 20,000 postcards on Bavarian history and over 3,000 historical posters. Bavaria's municipalities
With the creation of the "new Bavaria" between 1799 and 1815, the municipalities were newly formed: Around 7,300 municipalities were created from over 40,000 settlements; today there are still 2,056 municipalities in Bavaria. The data collection presents the coats of arms of all Bavarian municipalities with image, blazon and history. A project of the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte and the General Directorate of the State Archives in Bavaria.
Bavaria in picture postcards
The media archive of the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte has a collection of almost 10,000 postcards on various topics of Bavarian history. The newly acquired collection of over 1,000 picture postcards and around 250 watercolors by the Isny-born painter Eugen Felle (1869-1934) is an important source of information on the views of Bavarian towns, markets and communities.
Portrait Gallery of Bavaria
146 portraits of people born or active in Bavaria between 1450 and 1600 make up the virtual "Bavarian Portrait Gallery". The paintings by masters such as Dürer, Cranach, Holbein and Grünewald, but also by anonymous artists, come from the holdings of the Bavarian State Painting Collections.
History of the Bavarian Parliament
The database on the history of the development of the Bavarian Parliament offers all periods of parliament and a compilation of legislative activity. It also lists members of parliament, cabinet members and other people involved in parliamentary history.
Contemporary witnesses
The internet portal "Zeitzeugen berichten" ("Contemporary witnesses report") lists contemporary witness interviews from the picture archive of the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte since 1986. The interviews can be searched using various search options such as name, topic or free search term.
Jewish cemeteries
Since the Holocaust, the history of Judaism has always been a search for traces. The endangerment of Jewish cemeteries and their graves is a well-known problem. The rural cemeteries in particular have become quiet. The "good places", the "houses of life" are now hidden under tall grass, bushes and trees. In our documentary "Jewish Cemeteries in Bavaria", we follow the traces of over 300 preserved and departed Jewish cemeteries in Bavaria as well as concentration camp cemeteries and memorials to the dead.
Jewish life in Bavaria
At the suggestion of the Bavarian State Government Commissioner for Jewish Life and the Fight against Anti-Semitism, for Remembrance Work and Historical Heritage, Dr. Ludwig Spaenle, former Minister of State, MdL, the House of Bavarian History (HdBG) has launched an internet project on the history of Jewish places in Bavaria in 2021 to mark the commemorative year "1700 years of Jewish life in Germany". The project combines the HdBG's existing projects on the Jewish cemeteries and the monuments and memorial plaques for Jewish soldiers of the First World War. In addition, the former and still existing Jewish communities and synagogues in Bavaria are now presented in text and pictures. Examples from the HdBG's extensive contemporary witness project and other media offerings complete the range.
Monasteries in Bavaria
The history of Bavaria cannot be written without the history of its monasteries. The monastery portal provides an overview of the monastery landscape in Bavaria from its beginnings to the dissolution of the monasteries in 1802/03. With detailed monastery histories, numerous pictures, music examples and links.
