The vocational academy lasts 2 to 3 school years and prepares students for a higher professional career.
Admission requirements: As a rule, an intermediate school-leaving certificate and a corresponding vocational qualification. However, the technical colleges differ in terms of admission requirements, duration of training and qualifications. Interested parties should enquire directly with the respective school. The respective admission requirements are regulated in §§ 4 to 8 FakO.
Degrees: The state final examination confers a state-defined professional title. Graduates of specialist academies in certain fields of training can take part in a supplementary examination. Those who pass it are entitled to study at a university of applied sciences.
Those who receive an overall grade of "very good" in the final examination of the vocational academy and in the supplementary examination are awarded the subject-specific higher education entrance qualification. This entitles the holder to study certain courses of study at academic universities in accordance with the Qualifications Ordinance and the list of the assignment of certificates of subject-specific higher education entrance qualification to higher education courses. Graduates of Fachakademien in certain fields of study are awarded the Bachelor Professional.

The supplementary examination is intended to determine whether the candidates have the knowledge and skills required for a degree course at a university of applied sciences, taking into account their professional training.
