With the e-license plate, you can use specially marked parking spaces or drive on streets approved for this purpose. The vehicle must be a purely electric vehicle or meet special requirements as a hybrid vehicle.

The vehicles must be assigned to class M1, N1, L3e, L4e, L5e or L7e. Vehicles in category N2 can receive an e-license plate if they can be driven in Germany with a category B driving license up to a permissible total weight of 4,250 kg.
The E license plate has the letter "E" after the identification number. It can also be issued as an interchangeable license plate or as a seasonal license plate.

The costs of the respective registration process apply (see under "Related topics"). You can apply for an e-license plate when registering a new vehicle or each time you transfer your vehicle.
If you want to provide your vehicle with an e-license plate, costs of around EUR 30.00 will be incurred.
Internet-based registration with an e-license plate costs EUR 13.10.
In addition, there are fees from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (EUR 0.60 - 3.80) and for document seals used (EUR 0.30 each).

You must obtain the license plates yourself from private providers at your own expense.
With a few exceptions, motor vehicles with a maximum design speed of more than six kilometers per hour and their trailers must have an official license plate as soon as they are used on public roads.
