Apply for reimbursement of the cost contribution (50 percent) for the integration course

If you have successfully completed the integration course within 2 or 3 years, you can apply for a refund of 50 percent of your cost contribution under certain conditions.

Procedure details

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) is a higher German federal authority and is responsible for reimbursing the cost contribution for successfully completed integration courses.

The prerequisite is that your integration course was subject to a cost contribution and that you achieved your "Integration course certificate" within the statutory period after your first participation authorization was issued.

The legal deadline for certificates issued before 31.01.2023 is 2 years. If your entitlement to participate was issued from 01.02.2023, the statutory period is 2 years for participation in a general integration course and 3 years for participation in a special integration course in accordance with Section 13 (1) of the Integration Course Ordinance (IntV). This includes, for example, a literacy course, a second language course, a youth integration course and a parents' or women's integration course.

You must successfully complete the language and orientation course with the final tests "Deutsch-Test für Zuwanderer" and "Leben in Deutschland". You have paid your fee to your course provider.

If you have attended the integration course free of charge throughout or have not achieved the "Integration course certificate", you will not receive a refund.

Reimbursement will be made on a pro rata basis unless you were exempt from the costs for the entire integration course.

You can submit your application online or in writing to the BAMF.

The following can apply for a refund

  • Persons who have successfully completed their integration course (language and orientation course and the respective final tests) within 2 years after the initial authorization to participate was issued or
  • Persons who have successfully completed their integration course (language and orientation course and the respective final tests) within 3 years of the issue of the first entitlement to participate, if the first entitlement to participate was issued from 01.02.2023 and participated in an integration course for special target groups according to § 13 paragraph 1 Integration Ordinance (IntV).

Further requirements:

  • Successful participation in the integration course (language and orientation course), certified by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) by means of an "Integration course certificate"
  • Applicants (successful course participants) must have paid the cost contribution themselves (no reimbursement in the case of cost exemption)

You can apply for a refund online directly via the federal administration portal or in writing to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF).
Online procedure:

  • Complete the online application for reimbursement of the cost contribution for the integration course.
  • Upload the required documents.
  • Submit your application.
    • Note: You will need the online ID function of your ID card with PIN or your electronic residence permit with PIN or your tax administration software certificate (ELSTER) for the online application.
  • The BAMF will check your application and contact you if there are any questions or missing documents.
  • You will receive notification of the approval or rejection of your application.
  • If your application is approved, you will receive a refund to the account you specified.

In writing by post:

  • You can complete the form on the BAMF website or via the federal portal and print it out or download it, print it out and complete it by hand.
  • Sign the completed form.
  • Attach the required supporting documents to your form.
  • Send the form to the BAMF regional office responsible for you.
  • The BAMF will check your application and contact you if there are any questions or missing documents.
  • You will receive a notification that your application has been approved or rejected.
  • If your application is approved, you will receive a refund to the account you specified.

There are no costs.

If your eligibility to participate was issued before 31.01.2023, the following applies: The statutory period is 2 years after the eligibility to participate was first issued, regardless of the type of course attended.

If your eligibility to participate was issued from 01.02.2023: The statutory time limit is 2 years if you have attended a general integration course or intensive course (Section 13 (2) Integration Course Ordinance).

The deadline is 3 years if you have taken part in a special integration course (in accordance with Section 13 (1) of the Integration Course Ordinance). This includes, for example, a literacy course, a second language course, a youth integration course and a parents' or women's integration course.
