A registered civil partnership is a partnership entered into between two people of the same sex for life.
Since 2001, people living in a same-sex relationship have had the opportunity to enter into a lifelong partnership. In Bavaria, the civil partnership was established by a declaration before the civil registrar or a notary. The civil partners could choose a common name (civil partnership name) at this time or at a later date.
There are various legal consequences associated with entering into a civil partnership, e.g. the obligation to care for and support each other and to live together, entitlement to maintenance, consequences for the matrimonial property regime and succession.
A civil partnership can be dissolved by a court decision at the request of one or both civil partners.
Since October 1, 2017, new civil partnerships can no longer be established. The background to this is that since this date, same-sex couples have been able to marry in the same way as opposite-sex couples. However, civil partnerships that have already been entered into will of course remain in place. If the civil partners wish to do so, they can convert the civil partnership into a marriage by making a joint declaration to the registrar.
You can have a civil partnership certificate issued on the basis of the civil partnership register kept at the relevant registry office.
