Procedure details

The administration-internal Bachelor's degree course in Library and Information Management (BA) is designed as a dual, very practice-oriented course.

The job description of a Bachelor of Arts is strongly influenced in all areas by modern developments in the field of IT. Another important focus of the profession is dealing with users, which is why social skills and enjoyment in dealing with people are important prerequisites for successful studies.

The theoretical training lasts four semesters and takes place at the Department of Archives and Libraries in Munich. A large part of the teaching is carried out by part-time lecturers from the field. In addition, there are two semesters of practical work experience, during which the candidates spend time in all the central departments of a large academic library and get to know all the important fields of activity. Internships at libraries in Germany and abroad are also part of the curriculum. This close integration of theory and practice in all parts of the course means that after completing their three-year training, students can be optimally deployed as generalists in all areas of an academic library.

Approximately 15 students (or depending on the demand for junior staff in the field of academic libraries) are recruited each year on October 1. You can find more information about the content and course of study, the recruitment authority and the application process on the Internet (see "Further links").

Recruitment requirements:

  • Unrestricted entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences, subject-specific higher education entrance qualification, general higher education entrance qualification or a level of education recognized as equivalent by the Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Culture, Science and the Arts (e.g. master craftsman's examination and equivalent advanced vocational training examinations)
  • German citizenship or citizenship of another member state of the European Union or citizenship of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland
  • Age limit: not yet 45 years of age at the time of recruitment
  • Adequate knowledge of at least two foreign languages
  • Successful participation in the special selection procedure of the state personnel committee and in the separate selection procedure of the respective division
  • an average grade of at least 3.0 in the subjects German, mathematics and English

The course of study first requires the establishment of a civil servant relationship on revocation with a Bavarian employer. This employer then assigns the civil servant to study at the university.

The prerequisite for establishing a civil servant relationship is first of all the passing of a state-wide selection procedure in which all applicants of a year group must participate.

An examination fee will not be charged.

Costs for travel, accommodation etc. cannot be covered.

Please note the dates for the selection procedure by the Bavarian State Personnel Committee (see "Further links").
