Hochschule für den öffentlichen Dienst in Bayern - Fachbereich Archiv- und Bibliothekswesen

Procedure details

The internal administrative course of study leading to the degree of "Diplom-Archivar/in (FH)" as a dual course of study guarantees the combination of a sound theoretical education with knowledge deepened through practical application.

On the basis of the Bavarian Archives Act, the public archives are responsible for archiving the documents held by public bodies in Bavaria - i.e. the state, local authorities, universities and all other corporations, institutions and foundations under public law. In concrete terms, this means All files, documents, maps, film and audio documents, digital data, etc. that are no longer required on an ongoing basis by the administration, judiciary and legislature must be recorded by the archives, checked for their archival value, taken over if necessary, stored and preserved as well as indexed, made usable and evaluated. University studies enable future archivists to handle a wide variety of documents from over 1200 years in an expert manner. The collections must not only be physically preserved, but above all their content must be communicated. The archives also advise the authorities, courts and other public bodies on document management. Training therefore focuses on archival, historical, administrative and technical subjects. In addition, there is intensive training in the field of archive management practice.

As this is a needs-based training program, a preparatory service can only be set up at intervals of several years. You can find more information about the content and course of study, the recruitment authority and the application process on the Internet (see "Further links").

Recruitment requirements:

  • Unrestricted entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences, subject-specific higher education entrance qualification, general higher education entrance qualification or a level of education recognized as equivalent by the Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Culture, Science and the Arts (e.g. master craftsman's examination and equivalent advanced vocational training examinations)
  • German citizenship or citizenship of another member state of the European Union or citizenship of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland
  • Age limit: not yet 45 years of age at the time of recruitment
  • Adequate knowledge of at least two foreign languages
  • Successful participation in the special selection procedure of the state personnel committee and in the separate selection procedure of the respective division

The course of study first requires the establishment of a civil servant relationship on revocation with a Bavarian employer. This employer then assigns the civil servant to study at the university.

The prerequisite for establishing a civil servant relationship is first of all the passing of a state-wide selection procedure in which all applicants of a year group must participate.

An examination fee will not be charged.

Costs for travel, accommodation etc. cannot be covered.

Please note the dates for the selection procedure by the Bavarian State Personnel Committee (see "Further links").
