As part of the recruitment of teachers at primary and secondary schools, any replacement requirements that subsequently arise are to be compensated for through the succession procedure. Vacant positions at primary and secondary schools can be filled with additional teachers (exclusively fixed-term employment contracts without a promise of subsequent permanent employment and without a promise of continued employment).

Primary and secondary school teachers (current examination year, waiting list applicants and free applicants) as well as grammar and secondary school teachers who do not receive a recruitment offer in this year's recruitment process and who have obtained their teaching qualification with an overall grade of 3.50 or better can apply in the succession procedure. Teachers with a teaching qualification for primary or secondary schools will be given priority.

Applicants with a 1st teaching qualification and students from higher semesters (each for one teaching profession) may also be considered as substitutes.

Applicants must apply to the respective government in writing or online.
