Grape varieties; application for classification

A grape variety classification must be drawn up for each administrative unit in the European Union in which viticulture is practiced. Only the grape varieties included in this list may be cultivated for wine production.

Responsible for you

Bayerische Landesanstalt für Weinbau und Gartenbau

Procedure details

In Bavaria, classification is standardized for all growing regions. In principle, all grape varieties named in the current list of the Bundessortenamt's register of varieties are classified for Bavaria. For grape varieties that are not yet registered in the Federal List of Varieties, classification for the production of quality wine for Bavaria can be applied for separately. The Bavarian State Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture examines the application and obtains an opinion from the Franconian Winegrowers' Association. If the classification is approved, this decision is submitted to the Ministry for further legal enforcement. Currently, 113 varieties are classified for the Bavarian wine-growing regions.

The applicant must prove that the grape variety is suitable for cultivation in Bavaria by submitting several years of trial results.
