Soil survey means a state-wide, comprehensive survey of the properties and distribution of soils in Bavaria. It is divided into two areas: the subsoil inventory and the soil surface inventory.
In the soil inventory, the soils are recorded selectively in the broad spectrum of different characteristics, systematized in their diversity and examined with regard to their current condition. Soil communities are identified that are typical in an area depending on the geological, geomorphological, hydrological and climatic situation. To investigate the current state, profiles are recorded, sampled and analyzed with regard to soil properties and soil contamination.
In the soil area inventory, the results of the soil inventory are regionalized by determining the distribution of soils and soil communities in the area by mapping or overview soil mapping. The soil maps describe the soils in the map boundary legend as soil types. Soil properties and soil parameters can be linked to the map via these soil types by assigning one or more so-called area-representative soil profiles to the designated area units, which are based on the results of the soil inventory. In addition to the profile structure and soil-genetic statements, analysis results can also be assigned here. In this way, the national soil survey provides important basic data that provides the basis for answering current soil protection issues.
The results of the current soil survey are only available in digital form. The Bavarian Soil Information System (BIS-BY) includes the data from the soil and land inventory (see "Further links"). A first insight into the soil data is provided by the UmweltAtlas Bayern of the State Office for the Environment. Overview soil maps at 1:25,000 or extracts from the soil inventory are available in digital form from the data center of the State Office for the Environment. Where already available, the 1:25,000 soil overview maps can also be obtained via INSPIRE-compliant services (display and download service) on the Internet (see "Related links").
The State Office for the Environment carries out the state geological survey by means of its own geological investigations and on the basis of geological investigations by third parties and ensures that the data is made available to the public.
