If you wish to operate an unmanned aircraft in Germany, you must first register with the Federal Aviation Office (LBA). Unmanned aircraft are colloquially known as drones and officially as Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). Registration is mandatory if your UAS

  • weighs at least 250 grams or
  • can record personal data with a camera or sensor.

After successful registration, you will receive a personal electronic UAS operator number, an e-ID. You can also operate several UAS with your operator number. It must be affixed to each UAS.

A drone operator is a person or organization that owns or rents one or more drones. You must take action yourself and register the drone with the LBA.

A drone pilot is the person who flies the drone. This does not have to be the owner of the drone. If your organization has already registered and attached the e-ID to the UAS, you do not need an additional e-ID as a remote pilot.

If you have already been registered by an air sports association and have received your e-ID, no further registration is required.

You are obliged to keep your data stored with the LBA up to date at all times and to report any changes immediately, for example if you move house.
