Procedure details

You need a valid radio certificate to participate in the mobile maritime radio service or the inland waterway radio service.

There are two types of radio certificates for the maritime radio service:

  • The general radio operating certificate, also known as the Long Range Certificate (LRC), entitles you to participate in VHF, border and shortwave radio as well as the mobile maritime radio service via satellite, which also works on the high seas.
  • The limited radio operating certificate, also known as the Short Range Certificate (SRC), only entitles you to participate in VHF radio, which is only sufficient near the coast.

To obtain the general radio operator's certificate (LRC), you normally have to pass a theory and practical test. However, if you already have a recognized certificate of competence or a radio certificate that is fully equivalent to the requirements for the LRC, you can apply for an LRC without an examination.

The original or a certified copy of the ABZ radio certificate must be submitted with the application. If another recognized certificate of competence or radio certificate is presented, it must be fully equivalent to the requirements for the LRC.

Not equivalent are, among others:

  • UBZ (VHF operating certificate for radio operators)
  • Marine radio certificate 1st and 2nd class
  • General marine radio certificate
  • General radiotelephony certificate
  • VHF radiotelephony certificate

The German Sailing Association (DSV) is responsible for issuing an LRC on presentation of an equivalent certificate.

  • You must be at least 18 years old to submit the application.
  • If you are a minor, the application can be submitted by a person with parental authority.
  • You have an equivalent recognized radio certificate, such as the general operating certificate for radio operators (ABZ).

  • Required Documents
    • ausgefüllter und unterschriebener Antrag
    • aktuelles Passbild
