The driving license authority (= district administrative authority) in your place of residence is generally responsible for matters relating to driving licenses. However, you can submit your driver's license application not only there, but also to your municipality of residence. This can be useful to avoid delays, as the district administrative authority usually requires information from the municipality of residence to process the application.
Further information on applying for a driver's license can be found under "Related topics". Here you will find, among other things, information about the documents required and the costs.
Driving licenses for trucks and buses are only valid for a limited period. You must apply to the local driving license authority to extend the period of validity.
If you want to drive a motor vehicle on public roads, you need a driving license that entitles you to drive this vehicle. The driving license is proof of your driving license.
As the holder of a foreign driving license, you can obtain a German driving license more easily under certain conditions.
If your driver's license has been revoked by a court or an authority, you can apply for a new driver's license and for proof of a new driver's license at the responsible driver's license authority (district office or independent city).
The validity of the new driving licenses will be limited to 15 years. The time limit only applies to the document, not the driving license itself.
