As part of an international school exchange, pupils can attend a host school abroad for a shorter or longer period of time.
The purpose of international school exchanges is for pupils from different countries to meet in person, to get to know other cultures and social systems and to promote intercultural understanding. It includes both exchanges with the school and individual exchanges.
... with the school
Numerous Bavarian schools offer school exchanges every year as part of an international school partnership, with reciprocal visits by classes or groups of pupils. In this type of exchange, the contact, organization and implementation of the measures are in the hands of the respective Bavarian school and its foreign partner school.
... and alone
Individual or one-to-one exchanges are often organized without the involvement of the school, e.g. privately or through exchange organizations.
Pupils who wish to go abroad for one or two weeks, several months or a whole school year as part of a school exchange can be granted leave of absence.
For this purpose, a foreign school corresponding to the type of school attended by the student must be regularly attended during the leave of absence.
The decision to attend a school abroad for a longer period of time and to live with a host family abroad should be carefully considered and coordinated with the parents/guardians, teachers and school management. With regard to a student's school career, questions about catching up on credits and/or advancement modalities, for example, must be clarified before a possible leave of absence. In addition to the school management and the guidance teachers at the school, the Bavarian Youth Council (BJR) can also provide advice.
