Procedure details

Turn assist systems monitor the area on the right-hand side of a vehicle when turning right. If there is a pedestrian there, for example, the driver is warned. These systems are also known as turning assistants and are designed to increase road safety.

You can apply to the Federal Office of Logistics and Mobility (BALM) for a grant (funding) for turning assistance systems for motor vehicles.

Applications can be submitted by

  • Owners, keepers, lessees and renters of:
    • eligible motor vehicles,
      • which are registered in Germany
      • are registered for use on public roads.

Funding is available for

  • system and external installation costs when retrofitting motor vehicles
  • as well as the system costs for equipping new vehicles

System costs include the costs for the turn-off assistance system including the necessary cabling.

External installation costs include the costs for installing the system as well as the costs for technical approval and entry in the registration certificate Part I.

You receive the subsidy as partial financing. This means that they receive the money in the form of a non-repayable grant. You may only start installing the cornering assistance system after you have submitted the application.

The grant amounts to a maximum of 80 percent of the eligible expenditure. The maximum amount is EUR 1,500 per individual measure. For each eligible person, a maximum of 10 individual measures per year are eligible for funding. Exceptions and all other details are regulated by the funding guideline for equipping motor vehicles with turning assistance systems.

Eligible for funding are

  • Owners and keepers
  • lessees and renters

of eligible motor vehicles registered for use on public roads in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Eligible motor vehicles within the meaning of these guidelines are

  • Commercial vehicles with a maximum permissible mass of more than 3.5 tons
  • Buses and coaches with more than 9 seats, including the driver's seat

The motor vehicles must

  • be registered for use on public roads and
  • be purchased and operated for commercial, freelance, non-profit or public-law activities.
