Students who wish to take the first state examination for a teaching position at public schools after completing their studies must register for this.
You will take the first state examination for a teaching position at public schools ("Erstes Staatsexamen") at the end of your studies for the teaching position at elementary school, the teaching position at secondary schools, the teaching position at intermediate schools, the teaching position at grammar schools or the teaching position for special education (exception: early state examination in the subject of educational science, if applicable). The First State Examination, together with your module achievements from the degree program, forms the First Teaching Qualification Examination.
The following standard periods of study as defined by higher education law apply to teacher training courses that conclude with the First State Examination:
If the degree course is extended, longer standard periods of study may apply. Further details are regulated by the regulations for the first examination for a teaching degree at public schools (Lehramtsprüfungsordnung I - LPO I).
The First State Examination is not organized and conducted by the university, but by the Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs as a central, uniform state examination. Two examination dates are offered each year (examination date in spring and examination date in fall). The specific examination dates are published by the Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, e.g. on the website of the State Ministry (see "Related links").
The course of study for the teaching profession at vocational schools does not conclude with a centrally organized state examination. The first state examination for vocational schools corresponds to a diploma or master's examination for vocational or business teachers (within the scope of the Bavarian Teacher Training Act) if it meets the requirements of the teaching profession and evidence of at least one year of relevant professional practical training or completed relevant professional training is also provided. Diploma or Master's examinations are organized and conducted by the universities. However, the teaching profession at vocational schools can be extended to include additional subjects, special educational qualifications, psychology with a focus on school psychology and pedagogical qualifications through the first state examination in accordance with § 86 LPO I. You can find the link to the corresponding online registration form under "Online procedure".
Further school-specific information on the First Teaching Qualification Examination in Bavaria and the associated courses of study can be found on the relevant pages under "Related links".
The required scope of studies and admission requirements that must be fulfilled by the start of the First State Examination are set out in § 22 LPO I (see "Legal basis").
In order to take the First State Examination in the subject combination (except for the teaching degree at vocational schools), the following is required, among other things:
Restricted admission requirements may apply for admission in an extension subject only.
Registration for the first state examination for a teaching post at public schools must be made via the online service provided (see "Online procedure"). The application form to be signed is generated with the help of a web assistant.
After entering the necessary information, it is forwarded digitally to the State Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs and also compiled in a PDF document. This document must be printed out and signed by you. It is expressly pointed out that only the submission (against confirmation of receipt) or sending (by registered mail) of the fully completed and signed form to the branch office of the examination office at the respective university is considered a proper registration.
