Regular road traffic counts
Nationwide road traffic counts are carried out regularly - usually every five years - to monitor traffic trends and determine traffic volumes on the qualified road network. In addition to the federal trunk roads (freeways and trunk roads) in Bavaria, the counts also cover the state roads and the majority of district roads.
The counts are carried out by the following authorities:
The Bavarian State Ministry of Housing, Building and Transport is responsible for coordinating the count within Bavaria. The results are available on the Internet (see "Related links").
Some large cities also carry out their own regular road traffic counts.
Automatic road traffic counting
Automatic permanent counting stations are used in Bavaria to continuously count road traffic.
The majority are located on federal highways and main roads, with a small number on state and district roads. These measuring devices record the traffic situation around the clock all year round. The long-term data from the automatic permanent counting stations form the basis for the extrapolation factors of the regular road traffic count.
The permanent counting stations are operated by Autobahn GmbH of the federal government on freeways and by the state building authorities on federal, state and district roads. The results of the automatic road traffic count are available on the Internet (see "Related links").
Special road traffic counts
For various reasons (e.g. road planning, traffic studies), (additional) special road traffic counts are carried out by the road authorities or the towns and municipalities. The following authorities are responsible for road construction on the individual roads:
