Graduates of a two-year full-time course at a vocational school for music are entitled to call themselves "state-certified ensemble leaders". Active directors or conductors of amateur music ensembles can acquire a comparable qualification if they complete a corresponding course at a Bavarian music academy while working.
The eleven vocational schools for music in Bavaria offer a two-year full-time course that primarily qualifies students to take on responsible tasks in the field of amateur music and part-time church music.
At the request of the amateur music associations and the Bavarian Music Council, the acquisition of a comparable qualification was made possible for appropriately qualified directors of amateur music ensembles who have not completed training at a vocational school for music or any other equivalent or higher-level music training.
The courses are organized by the amateur music associations in cooperation with one of the three Bavarian music academies and, if possible, with a vocational school for music.
After passing the examination, the Bavarian State Ministry of Science and the Arts can award recognition as a leader in amateur music-making. A corresponding application must be submitted to the State Ministry via the relevant amateur music association.
State recognition is granted for the following amateur music categories:
Completion of a corresponding course at a Bavarian music academy with a successful final examination in accordance with the examination regulations issued by the Bavarian Music Council or successful completion of at least an equivalent institution and, at the time of application, ongoing activity as conductor (conductor or deputy conductor) of an amateur music ensemble.
The course costs are subsidized by the associations. State recognition is free of charge.
